Whiplash Injury - an introduction

There are estimated to be over 100,000 whiplash injuries in the UK every year. Though most commonly associated with motor accidents, a whiplash injury could also be caused by an accident at work or contact sports. With a car crash it is usually caused when you are thrown suddenly forwards and then backwards. These sudden movements cause a sudden strain which affects the nerves, bones, discs, muscles, or tendons of the neck. The bones of the neck could be moved slightly out of position, the muscles and tendons may become torn or stretched; causing irritated nerves which can interfere with flow of blood and transmission of nerve impulses. A whiplash injury could very nasty and can be extremely uncomfortable and could last for some time.

How is a whiplash injury diagnosed?

Your doctor's diagnosis of a whiplash injury is usually based on his consideration of your medical history, and observation of your symptoms and a physical examination. The symptoms of whiplash may appear immediately following the accident or they may not develop until hours, days, or even weeks after the accident. If your GP feels that your whiplash injury require further investigation he might sent you to hospital for a computed tomography scan (also called a CAT or CT scan) - as many whiplash injuries include damage to soft tissue that does not show up on x-rays. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) might also be used.
